Total Station memiliki kemampuan untuk merekam dan mengumpulkan data hasil pengukuran jarak dan sudut pada alat perekam, yang nantinya dapat diproses dengan menggunakan perangkat lunak komputer di akhir survey. Untuk akurasi yang optimal, maka digunakan prisma, yaitu suatu alat yang dapat merefleksikan gelombang cahaya yang kembali ke perangkat pengukuran untuk menentukan pengukuran. Dalam keadaan di mana akurasi tidak begitu diharuskan secara di maksimum, maka total station dapat digunakan dalam modus reflectorless dimana alat tersebut dapat memperoleh fitur pengukuran jarak tanpa menggunakan prisma.

Total stasiun tidak hanya digunakan untuk pengukuran dan mengumpulkan data survey, tetapi juga bisa digunakan untuk menetapkan posisi desain. Dengan menggunakan prisma pada tiang pipa (dan biasanya offsider an), surveyor dapat menentukan dimana pasak perlu ditempatkan setelah sebelumnya data desain dimasukan terlebih dahulu ke alat memori total station atau secara manual satu per satu data desain. Kegiatan ini lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Staking Out yaitu pekerjaan penerapan data desain pada lokasi yang sebenarnya.
